CBD Oil For Insomnia: Does It Work?

CBD Oil for Insomnia: Does it Work?

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that affects roughly 60 million American citizens each year. At this time, scientists are still at a loss when it comes to understanding why or how this phenomenon affects people the way it does.

Chronic sleeplessness is a destructive and debilitating force in the lives of those it affects. The experience varies from person to person and can manifest in different ways. For some, insomnia shows up in their lives as an inability to fall asleep. Many others suffering from this disorder have grown accustomed to feelings of anxiety. Finding themselves awake in the middle of the night and unable to fall back asleep, these insomniacs are notorious for tossing, turning, and counting down the hours until their alarm goes off.

Specialists and experts on the topic recommend a variety of solutions to treat this lack of a good night’s rest. These lifestyle changes usually range from being proactive in your daily and nighttime routines, to dietary supplements, and the treatment of underlying issues.

Why Some People Are Turning to CBD  Oil for Insomnia

CBD (cannabidiol) is a component of the cannabis plant often most commonly associated with calm and relaxation, so it makes sense that people are giving it a shot to fight issues like insomnia, anxiety, and depression. This particular part of the cannabis plant has recently become a topic of intense scrutiny and discussion amongst scientific researchers. Associated with a number of benefits related to the realms of health and wellness, the use of CBD to treat a host of common ailments is becoming more and more acceptable.

As the interest in CBD as a potential supplement continues to grow, a number of scientific studies have been performed in order to get a deeper insight to the many ways it may be able to benefit us. Throughout a number of these studies, CBD has been shown to positively affect certain aspects of human behavior such as emotions, mood, sleep, stress, irritability, and fear.

How CBD Affects the Brain and Aids Sleep

As mentioned previously, CBD has long been associated with feelings of calm and relaxation. Scientifically, evidence supports this theory, pointing to a calming effect within the central nervous system with CBD.

CBD and The Brain

Through years of research, scientists have discovered that CBD appears to work with certain receptors in the human brain which are responsible for affecting and regulating some aspects of our mental health and wellness. These aspects include factors such as mood, stress, energy, and much more. Specifically, the 5HT1A receptors [5-6] are responsible for controlling the levels of a chemical in the brain known as serotonin, which is associated with feelings of happiness and wellbeing. Likewise, Endocannabinoid receptors, which are often discussed in conjunction with the cannabis plant, are related to a number of functions including energy and stress levels.

A CBD Study on Sleep and Anxiety

A recent clinical study which documented sleep quality and anxiety in a final sample of 72 patients. The results demonstrated a positive relationship between the use of CBD and reported anxiety and quality of sleep.

Researchers found a decrease in anxiety was reported by 79.2% of patients throughout the study. Notably, throughout the remainder of the study, those same patients continued to experience those decreased levels of anxiety.

In reporting the quality of their sleep, results demonstrated that 66.7% of patients involved in this particular study reported experiences of improved sleep quality. Over time, however, those results tended to fluctuate.

Ultimately, the study was able to determine that there may be a benefit when it comes to CBD and the treatment of anxiety-related disorders. Further study is needed to gain more insight into the finer points on this topic, however, it seems likely that CBD may have some benefit on insomnia (which seems to be often related to anxiety, stress, and an inability to calm down).

In short, if your chronic sleeplessness is related to feelings of anxiety, CBD could be the answer to your prayers. By treating an underlying cause of insomnia with CBD, you may find yourself more able to easily fall into a state of relaxation and thus–sleep.

What Are Some Other Common Treatments for Insomnia

For those whose underlying causes of insomnia are not related to anxiety, The National Sleep Foundation references a number of commonly used treatments you may choose to try out instead.

Ultimately, what works for you may not be the same treatment that works for a loved one or friend who is experiencing the same symptoms. Above all, it is important to gain an understanding of the patterns involved in your chronic sleeplessness. As you begin to dive deeper, you may uncover answers to some of the underlying causes for your insomnia, and thus seek to understand what the best method of recourse would be in terms of dealing with it.

  1. Train Your Body (and Muscles) to Relax: This usually involves some techniques you may have seen or experienced in practices like mindfulness, meditation, guided imagery, and deep breathing exercises. More formally known as relaxation training, or progressive muscle relaxation, these techniques train the body to purposefully tense and relax muscles in different areas of the body.
  2. Keep the Television Out of the Bedroom: Stimulus control is all about training your mind to automatically associate your bedroom with sleep. In order to create this relationship, which hopefully triggers a sleep response, the individual should limit activities in the bedroom to those associated with sleeping and adhere to a strict sleep schedule.
  3. Changing Your Thoughts and Behaviors: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) involves removing unhealthy thought patterns and beliefs surrounding sleep and replacing them with rational, positive thoughts. It also incorporates behavioral changes such as incorporating regular wake and sleep times. It can be a lot of work, but many people find it to be extremely effective.

Is CBD the Right Treatment for My Insomnia?

The bottom line: determining the best treatment for your patterns of chronic sleeplessness will depend largely on the things that keep you up at night. If your insomnia is driven by anxiety, or perhaps even the fear of being unable to fall back to sleep, you may want to consider giving CBD a shot. Known for its abilities to provide feelings of calm and relaxation, CBD could be a natural, safe solution to a debilitating problem.
